Marble statue (H. 0.68), found in 1933 when the Villa Barberini, partly situated on the ruins of the Alban Villa of Domitianus, was added to the papal country-residence, Castel Gandolfo.

Standing Aion before a throne. His body is covered with a loin-cloth only. He has a lion's head and four wings are attached to his shoulders. On his breast an eye, on stomach and knees lion's heads. He has four arms, the hands of which are broken off. In one hand a sceptre. Beside his feet a hydra and a horned(?) lion's head (r) and a sitting three,headed Cerberus (l). On either side a trunk entwined by a serpent. The left one is crawling upwards, the other lays its head above that of the Cerberus, consisting of a dog's, a lion's and ram's head.

Aion in piedi davanti a un trono. Il suo corpo è coperto solo da un perizoma. Ha una testa di leone e quattro ali sono attaccate alle sue spalle. Sul petto un occhio, sulla pancia e sulle ginocchia teste di leone. Ha quattro braccia, le cui mani sono spezzate. In una mano uno scettro. Accanto ai suoi piedi un'idra e una testa di leone cornuto(?) (r) e un Cerbero seduto a tre teste (l). Ai lati un tronco intrecciato da un serpente. Quello di sinistra sta strisciando verso l'alto, l'altro poggia la testa sopra quella del Cerbero, composta da una testa di cane, di leone e di ariete.

interessante la diversificata & complessa iconografia simbolica espressa IN codesta rappresentazione di Castel Gandolfo...il carico esoterico è ENORME rispetto alle tante classiche più o meno rappresentazioni di "altri" periodi storici... ![[:291]](./images/smilies/UF/dubbioso.gif "Dubbioso")
