FIRST LIGHT FROM THE NEW SOLAR TELESCOPE: Before you read another word, click on the image and take a close look at sunspot 1084:
This is a first light adaptive optics image from the New Solar Telescope (NST - http://www.njit.edu/news/spotlight/2008 ... 032608.pdf) at the Big Bear Solar Observatory in California. "With a 1.6-meter primary mirror, the NST is the largest solar telescope in the world," says Nicolas Gorceix of the observatory staff. "It has realtime correction for atmospheric distortion (adaptive optics), so we can see things in very high resolution--as small as 65 km wide on the sun."
"For perspective," he adds, "Earth is slightly smaller than the whole sunspot including the dark umbra and the daisy petal-like penumbra. The spot is surrounded by the sun's ubiquitous granular field [which shows the boiling motions of the sun's surface]."
Researchers believe that high-resolution studies of sunspots can help them understand how sunspots evolve and anticipate when they're about to erupt. "Next year, we plan to upgrade the telescope with a much higher-order adaptive optics system to get even better images," says Gorceix. Incredibile Nuova Immagine di una Macchia Solare Grazie ad un Nuovo Telescopio
Un nuovo tipo di ottiche adattive per le osservazioni solari ha prodotto incredibili risultati, fornendo quella che per ora è la più dettagliata immagine mai ottenuta in luce visibile di una macchia solare. Un nuovo telescopio è stato costruito al New Jersey Institute of Technology, presso il Big Bear Observatory. Il nuovo telescopio ha visto la sua prima luce tramite l’uso di una lente deformabile, che è in grado di ridurre notevolmente le distorsioni atmosferiche. Questo è il primo telescopio solare di classe costruito in più di una generazione nei Stati Uniti.
Il New Solar Telescope(NST) si trova nelle montagne a est di Los Angeles. Ha attualmente 97 attuatori che deformano lo specchio per migliorare la nitidezza delle immagini, compensando ai movimenti atmosferici, ma entro l’estate del 2011, in collaborazione con il National Solar Observatory(NSO), il Big Bear Solar Observatory otterrà un nuovo sistema di ottiche adattive che usa uno specchio deformabile con ben 349 attuatori. Il telescopio ha un apertura di 1.6 metri, con una risoluzione di circa 80.5 km sulla superficie del Sole.
Il NST sarà l’apristrada per la costruzione di un futuro nuovo telescopio solare terrestre ben più ambizioso è grande. Si tratta del Advanced Technology Solar Telescope, che sarà costruito nel prossimo decennio.
Philip R. Goode del NJIT guida un partnership con il NSO per sviluppare un nuovo e ben più sofisticato tipo di ottica adattiva, conosciuto come sistema multi-coniugato di ottica adattiva.
Questo nuovo sistema ottico permetterà ai ricercatori di aumentare il campo di vista libero da distorsioni permettendo cosi una migliore risoluzione e studio delle aree più intriganti della superficie solare, insieme ad un apertura del telescopio che sarà di ben 4 metri.
