Un missile balistico intercontinentale francese adibito al trasporto di testate nucleari è esploso nel lancio-test da un sottomarino a propulsione nucleare nell’Atlantico, al largo della costa della Bretagna. L’hanno annunciato le autorità francesi, ammettendo il «fallimento» e aggiungendo che non c’erano testate nucleari. «Ho sentito vibrare il terreno», ha raccontato un testimone che si trovava in un bar di Audierne quando è stato effettuato il lancio. «Sono uscito e ho visto il fumo bianco», ha aggiunto. L’M51, diventato operativo dal 2010 dopo cinque collaudi in mare e tre da basi di lancio terrestri, rimpiazza l’ormai obsoleto M45. Si tratta di un missile balistico intercontinentale con una gittata fra i 6.000 e gli 8.000 km, lungo 12 metri e pesante 56 tonnellate, capace di trasportare sei testate atomiche indipendenti. La Difesa francese ha precisato che si tratta del primo fallimento di un test missilistico per la Francia dal 1996.

French M51 Ballistic Missile Self-Destructs in Failed Test

BREST, FRANCE — A French test of an M51submarine-launched ballistic missile failed on Sunday as it self-destructed off the coast of Brittany, officials said.

“It was a failure, the reasons will be determined by an investigation,” said Lt. Commander Lionel Delort, a spokesman for the Atlantic Naval Prefecture.

He said the missile “self-destructed during its first propulsion phase...for an unknown reason.”

The missile was test fired, without a nuclear warhead, from the Vigilant —a strategic nuclear submarine — from the Bay of Audierne at 0730 GMT and had been due to go down in the isolated north Atlantic.

The defense ministry said in a statement that it “was destroyed shortly after launch, over the ocean,” without providing further details.

Delort said the area had been cleared of vessels and aircraft prior to the launch and that debris from the missile — which fell about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the coast — would be collected for analysis.

The M51, which has a range of 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles), was put into operation in 2010 following five successful test launches.

Witnesses told AFP they heard a loud explosion and saw trails of smoke when the missile test failed.

“We saw flashes in the sky, I thought it was a plane exploding,” Claude Jean, a resident of Cap Sizun on the northern end of the bay, told AFP.

France is estimated to have a stockpile of about 300 nuclear warheads, the majority of them designed for launching from its four Triomphant-class submarines. The remainder are designed for delivery from both land- and carrier-based aircraft.
