Airlines, engine manufacturers and the CAA will meet with transport secretary Philip Hammond today to discuss safety levels for flying through volcanic ash.
The meeting will look at the latest evidence about what are the levels of ash that aircraft can safely fly through.
Jonathan Moor, director of aviation for the Department for Transport, said: “The meeting will assess the progress of understanding the engine tolerance to ash.”
He said that while the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, which caused the six-day shutdown of much of Europe’s airspace in the spring was no longer emitting ash, there was a danger that one of the neighbouring volcanoes could erupt.
“
If the neighbouring volcano, Katla, goes off it will send much higher concentrations of ash into the atmosphere,” Moor told a House of Lords committee on Monday. “We need to understand what is a safe level of ash.”
Moor said there was a lot of research going on into the effects of ash on aircraft engines.
“There is a real sense of urgency but the tests could be very expensive and take a very long time,” he added. “We know that volcanic ash is a safety risk to aircraft – the issue is what’s the safe level of concentration.”
